Preschool Programs Edgecombe County Public Schools offer preschool programs on five elementary school sites and an Early Learning Center. All of our preschool programs are designed to be an inclusive environment. These classes are composed of Title 1 At-Risk students, More at Four, Fee for Service, and developmentally delayed three and four year old children. All preschool classes operate five days a week following a regular school day. Transportation is provided to all students living in the schools attendance zone.
The Creative Curriculum along with Foundations- North Carolina's Early Learning Standards is used to ensure the learning environment is of high quality and child focused. Portfolio's of the children's development are kept and shared with family members three times a year. Our classrooms are center based and used the project approach to guide development in the five developmental domains: language, motor, approaches to learning, cognition, and emotional/ social.
ECPS has a Preschool classroom at Stocks Elementary school that is recognized as a model classroom through the NC Office of Early Learning.
Smooth Transitions
Going to Kindergarten Transition into Kindergarten is an important time in children's lives, and it influences their later school careers. There are many disconnects between home and school or preschool and school.
Edgecombe County Public Schools offers many activities and services to help children and their families prepare for school. Each elementary school has an early childhood contact funded by Smart Start to support families and provide information for successful, smooth transitions.

Read to Achieve
Third-grade students receive extra attention in North Carolina because of the state’s Read to Achieve legislative initiative, a part of the Excellent Public Schools Act. Under this state law, third-grade students who are not reading at grade level by the end of third grade will receive special help, including summer reading camp and other interventions to make sure that they can read well enough to be able to do fourth-grade work.
Reading 3D
mCLASS:Reading 3D fuses best practices across pedagogical approaches. Combining a running records text reading and comprehension (TRC) diagnostic with quick indicators of foundational skills development provides a complete picture of your students’ ability to read with comprehension.
The Daily 5
The Daily 5™ is more than a management system or a curriculum framework - it is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence. The Daily 5 provides the structure for guided reading.
CAFE
CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary, and the system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs and fine tuning one on one conferring.
Guided Reading
Guided reading is a common component of the elementary curricula. It involves working with a small group of students with similar skills to help improve literacy.
